General Information

The Woodcraft Folk is an educational movement for children and young people, designed to develop self confidence and activity in society, with the aim of building a world based on equality, friendship, peace and co-operation. This is summed up well by our motto: "Span the World with Friendship"

The Woodcraft Folk was founded in 1925 and, at the end of last year, had over 500 groups across Britain. The Woodcraft Folk has close links with the Co-operative Movement. More information about its history can be found here.

The Woodcraft Folk believes in the principles of co-operation, democracy, equal opportunities and international friendship. These ideals, like our concern for the environment, peace and our distaste of prejudice and discrimination are reflected in the activities we carry out on a weekly basis with our groups. Our young members have a role to play in the making of the world they live in and consequently, we encourage them to make a positive contribution to their community.

Woodcraft Folk activities are based around weekly group meetings for both boys and girls. Groups are divided into four age ranges:

• Woodchips - under 6,
• Elfins - 6 to 9 year olds,
• Pioneers - 10 to 12 year olds,
• Venturers - 13 to 15 year olds and
• District Fellowship - 16 to 20 year olds.

Group meetings are planned programmes of personal and social education in which young people play an active part. Programmes may include games, drama, singing, dancing, craftwork, discussion, and projects - and of course fun! There are Woodcraft Folk groups throughout the United Kingdom.

At present both Elfin's and Pioneers groups are active in Rochdale. We are also somewhat flexible on the standard age ranges with some Elfins who are less than 6 years old.
